This fascinating museum is dedicated to trains and is located in a lovely former train station at Maliebaan in Utrecht.
The Spoorweg museum is definitely oriented to children but adults who enjoy history, engineering and transportation memorabilia will also enjoy it very much. If you have kids or grandkids it is a wonderful way to spend part of the day.
Many old train engines and rail cars are housed here including the compartments for the King and Queen. There is even a fun ride and interactive exhibits.
Check out the models of bridges and random ephemera and signage relating to trains and trams in the Netherlands. The station building has been restored to its appearance in the 19th century with the addition of a luxurious waiting room from the Staatsspoor station in Den Haag which was demolished to make way for Den Haag Centraal.
The Dutch Railway Museum is definitely worth a visit! Just hop on the train from Utrecht Centraal to Maliebaan and enjoy this walk through transportation history. And if you like the Spoorweg Museum you will also enjoy the London Transport Museum.
